However, in a residential setting there are several layers applied, each acting as added sound barriers and reducing noise.

In most cases a plywood or ASB decking is applied over the roof rafters on which your roofing materials are laid. Drawbacks

1. Higher cost
Yes, the cost is higher, at least initially. In the long run however, the cost is less because of many of the benefits listed above.

2. I can't think of any others
Well ... perhaps one more . . .
For many designs it is recommended you hire a contractor who has done a number of projects similar to the type you plan to do. With asphalt shingle you do have an easier installation process, particularly if you are a DIYer.

I think the Benefits far surpass the drawbacks.
