Metal Fascia

Metal fascia is gaining popularity by leaps and bounds.

Fascia boards, a trim piece located at the eve, is usually a 1x6 or 1x8 board around the perimeter of your home. Painting is the normal finish on this piece of wood on which your drip edge hangs over the top edge. This is also the foundation or mounting base for rain gutters.

Maintenance Free Fascia
You may want to wrap your fascia with a thinner gauge metal wrap in a matching color = no further painting, ever! This is one method more and more people are using to reduce maintenance around their homes, and it looks Great!

Some fascia boards are so old and worn they no longer hold paint well. Rather than replace the fascia boards a metal wrap is a wonderful option, as long as they are not badly warped. With a metal wrap the wood is protected against further deterioration, and . . . No further painting is required!

A piece of metal is made to cover the fascia board. Standard size is 6" or 8", but it can be made in any size needed, usually in 10 foot lengths. This metal slips up under the drip edge and wraps under the bottom of the fascia board. Some will have a second 90 degree bend to wrap up the backside of the fascia board about an inch, perhaps two, more if you wish.

With Soffit
When soffit is installed under your eves the soffit is sometimes placed at the bottom of the fascia board with the metal fascia wrapping under and holding the soffit in place. One nail or screw then fastens through both the fascia wrap and then the soffit to secure both, about every 18 inches or 2 feet. This gives a clean look to the underside of the eves and can provide great ventilation through your attic. For a cleaner application wrap the fascia board up behind the fascia board and nail on the back side. The soffit is then applied with a J-Channel = no nails will be seen.

The greater your attic ventilation the longer the life of your roof. We are assuming ventilation exists to the attic from the area soffit is being installed. If that is not the case then use solid soffit material - non-vented.

If you are using metal fascia wrap to hold your soffit the fascia will have one 90 degree bend. The long side of the fascia is pushed up under the drip edge. The 90 degree bend is the thickness of the fascia board, about 1", and covers the bottom edge of the fascia board. This will be the least expensive install method.

Without Soffit
If you are not installing soffit it is recommended there be a second 90 degree bend. The metal portion after the second bend wraps up behind the fascia board. This only needs to be an inch or two, whatever is your preference.

Cost
Standard Fascia, one right angle bend, will typically run about $16.00 for the 6" fascia and $18.00 for the 8" per 10' length. If you want a second bend that will run a little more. For other estimated prices on metal and asphalt roofing and accessories see initial cost comparisons for roofing.

Purpose of

1. The idea here is that the metal fascia wrap will keep water off the fascia board so the second 90 degree bend is not necessary but I think you will find that it does looks better.

2. The second purpose, which is more important to me, is that the fascia around my home will no longer need painting again . . . E V E R !!!!

3. The wood fascia board will be protected and preserved from any further deterioration.

4. And, if we need a fourth purpose, it simply looks a lot better!

You can get Metal Fascia in a texture or smooth surface and with or without ribbing. The ribs will strengthen the metal. This prevents oil-canning, or distortion of the metal, and reduces future denting caused from various sources of abuse.

Oh . . . one more thing. It comes in just about any color your heart desires!
