Metal Roofing Underlayment

Metal Roofing Underlayment is really no different than you would use under an asphalt shingle roof or any other roof. The idea is that you need a moisture barrier on the roof deck, under the roofing material. This product is designed to keep moisture from penetrating into unwanted areas.

Ice and Water Shield
If you live in an area where you get snow, even occasionally, it's a good idea to install "Ice and Water Shield" along the edges of your roof, the eves and rakes. This is a specialized underlayment, a moisture barrier. It's purpose is to keep moisture from seeping or penetrating into the wooden deck area of your roof from standing ice and water.

Underlayment
Underlayment is one additional item you will need almost always. Even if you are not tearing off the old asphalt shingle you need to apply new underlaymant on top of the current shingles. In some cases furring strips may be needed on top of the underlayment to make the surface of the new roof smooth and even. Another good reason for furring strips under metal is the ventilation they create causing air movement and a cooler living space.

If you are using the Low-E Reflective Insulation that would go on top of your underlayment with the roofing installed on top of the Low-E, preferably under furring strips.

Feltex
The Underlayment we recommend is Feltex which is a highly specialized fabric with a 25 year warranty.

It's amazing that the price per square for this product is very close to that of much lesser quality products.
