Rusty Metal Roofing

8. What about rusty metal roofing? Won't a Metal Roof rust out, and look ugly, over time? Or, will the color fade over time?

Will my metal roof rust out?
Rusty Metal Roofing was certainly a problem in the past, as you can see from this picture.

No longer need to worry about rusty metal roofing. No more! We’ve come a long way baby! Metal roofing material now goes through several baths for a number of reasons, basically to give you a trouble free roof. The different manufacturers have slightly different approaches. For example; rust on steel is eliminated with a zinc/aluminum coating, via a “bath” if you will, or several coatings of various kinds.

Now if you use untreated metal, perhaps for out buildings, you can get some rust going if you wish. Most people no longer want that old Victorian look, although you can buy a metal that has been treated to give it a "Rustic" look and feel. When you purchase treated metals there's no longer any need to worry about rusting of your metal roofing.

Will the color fade over time?
Metal producers now coat metal with resin based coatings like Kynar 500 and Hynar 5000 to stop color from fading. This is one of those "baths" we spoke of above. With the Kynar 500 and Hynar 5000 coatings fading is now also problem of the past. Colors in Metal Roofing can be protected with these coatings, and others like them, so that fading of colors is no more.

The Kynar 500 and Hynar 5000 coatings were invented by Dupont while perfecting their well know Teflon coatings for kitchen cookware. Resin based, these coatings are fused with color and are designed to maintain your chosen color for an indefinite period with little to no fading.

Yes, but … ! Yes, color on any material will fade to some degree. Metal treatment has seen extraordinary advances in the past 20 plus years. Sure, a Metal Roof will fade over the years as will anything left to the harshness of the elements. But, on metal with these certain paint treatments or coatings you can now secure a warranty for up to 35 years protecting you from color fading. In most cases you will not notice any color change.
