Rusty Metal Roofing

Rusty metal roofing, or vintage roofing, can be purchased! This roof actually fits under the "Panel" metal roofing category, however, it is a highly specialized metal roof.

The Rusty or Rustic style is mainly used by folks who want to achieve a certain look - which I simply call - "old".

This Rusty metal roofing or Vintage style roof can be achieved with either of two types of metal. Corten, which is often referred to as A606 type 4, is a treated metal. The other is bare cold rolled steel, untreated. They both may look the same but the Corten is treated with a "bath" of copper, nickel and other materials to retard or slow the rusting process whereas the bare sheets have nothing to prevent rust. The advantage of the bare metal is that it will of course cost less. On the other hand the treated metal will last a whole lot longer.

You may purchase this style roofing in a snap lock panel or in a corrugated style. The snap lock, or standing seam, typically comes in a 16" flat panel with a 3/4" standing snap lock seam. The corrugated looks older, in my view, and simulates a wave pattern like the galvanized corrugated panels.

Warranty
There are pros and cons for this product. But, the major negative is that there is no, None, ZERO Warranty! You pay considerably for this material which has rust already at work. This is the major reason it is purchased, for that appealing patina rustic, or vintage, look and feel.

While the A606 has a protective coating it is designed to slow rust initially. Usually the coatings will eventually stop or at least prevent the rust from penetrating through the metal. This rusty metal roofing should never need painting or any rust prevention maintenance.

People buy this metal to achieve a rustic or vintage look for their home or cabin. More power to them but I want a metal roof that never ends up looking like old rusty metal roofing let alone start out that way . . . however, if you want that old look this is the ideal product for your project!

The untreated metal will continue to rust as will the treated material, just a little slower.

Increased Lifespan
Whichever product you choose let me recommend two things to help achieve longer roof life. One, buy a thicker panel than you may normally purchase. Buy a 22 gage or better. Two, Do all you possibly can to keep moisture from accumulating and standing anywhere on your roof. The first line of defense is to install this roof in a very dry climate. If that is not going to happen then make sure your design sheds rain, snow and other moisture as quickly as is possible. The steeper the better and never below a 3/12 pitch as the absolute minimum.

Good luck with this. With proper design, careful installation and a little luck you should have a 50+ year roof, but . . . remember . . . no guarantees.

We can ship this material to you. All you need do is provide us with your cut list. For additional information and to answer any of your questions please feel free to contact us anytime.
